Candice Lin, Phillip Mayles & Racine Polycarpe

My proposal for the ghetto biennial intended to work with a small group of four to five people doing psychological theatrical work around the unconscious and dreaming. Not speaking Kreyol myself, I realized upon arrival that it would be difficult to find four or five people who I could communicate well enough with that could be available to work with me consistently. I also wanted in some way to activate and document the amazing sculptures I was seeing everywhere, so I thought about the idea of animating the sculptures as characters, repositories, or embodiments of peoples' dreams. I felt also that people were much more inclined to share things as personal as dreams when I spoke with them one on one rather than in a group as I had originally planned. With Racine and Belle's help I was able to meet other people, record their dreams, and with translation, start to brainstorm with Racine about what kinds of images would make the most sense to pair with the audio of individuals' dreams. The animating of sculptures and video of surrounding locations and props happened organically as we brainstormed and collected the material of different people's dreams. I would have liked to include more visiting artists dreams as well, to show how we unconsciously were affecting each other, but everyone I asked was understandably too preoccupied with their own projects.
