ARCHIVED WORK OF PARTICIPATING ARTISTS & SCHOLARS
Charlotte Hammond
The project Wob ki vwayaje sought to explore dress as a political and gendered document of the archive. The plan was for historical elements to be re-delivered from France to Haiti within these empty dresses and in doing so provoke interesting connections and relations between the object of the garment and the viewer in the contemporary context of the Gran Rue neighbourhood in Port-au-Prince. What was accomplished during the Ghetto Biennale was an interesting process of paper costume making, where the artist worked from historical imagery as well as incorporating skills learnt on site, such as bakoua weaving techniques, from artists working locally. The resulting pieces themselves were less important than how, subsequently, they came to be used, integrated and disintegrated as props in the carnivalesque theatre of the Ghetto Biennale event.
